First tattoo, age 38, and it's a big one

This month, I got inked. Not a little token of a tattoo but an actual, can't-miss-it upper arm tat. I knew instinctively what I wanted: the Hamsa ancient symbol of protection, featuring an eye to ward off evil. A kind of "don't mess with me" statement that feels tough and a little rebellious (even though I'm 38). And I absolutely love the end result (see pic below).

What I learnt from the process was:

  • It only hurts a little, particularly if you pick a fleshy spot and go for line work

  • Tattoo parlours feel a bit like hair salons if you go to a nice one - I even drank a lemon and ginger tea there

  • The after-care regime is super simple and I didn't have any issues with it, except I can't swim for 2 weeks

  • Once it's done, you get a really great adrenaline hit and sense of empowerment at making such a bold choice. It feels like you've done something a little bit naughty and got away with it. That's one reason why it's addictive!

I think my new tat suits me. I can appear sweet and friendly, and I wear a lot of "mum clothes" but, in truth, I've always been drawn to edgy looks and rebels. My teenage years were soundtracked by Nirvana, Placebo, Deftones, Skunk Anansie, Green Day and Blink 182. The first festival I went to was Download 2003. And I love documentaries and books about the punk scene of the late 70s.

I felt like this side of me needed to go into hiding when I entered the working world. I just couldn't see a place for piercings and studded belts. So I binned my "emo girl" wardrobe and bought a French Connection suit. (Actually, I think my mum bought it for me). It was fun to play with a more professional image and spend my pay cheque on pretty Topshop dresses, but I always missed the Doc Martens...

So welcome back, Scorpio Girl. For those who aren't into astrology this sign is not the warmest and fluffiest but is determined, loyal and brave. It's my Rising Sign, so I definitely identify with its middle finger backwards attitude. We're the ones eying up others in the room to get their measure before delivering a stinging put-down. But, when it comes to revolution, rebellion, re-invention and transformation, Scorpio Girl is who you want on your side. And, really, that sums up my tattoo and what it means to me.
