Setting up a freelance content marketing business from Shanghai

Lois’s story

My client, Lois, is an experienced writer, editor and marketer, based in China’s biggest city, Shanghai. She was in a full-time corporate content/comms role out there but felt bored and lacking direction. She knew she wanted to start up as a freelance content writer/editor but it felt like a big leap that she wasn’t equipped to make. She joined the Megawatt coaching programme to support her in breaking away from full-time employment, defining her services, and confidently securing great client projects.

By the end of the two-month programme Lois had:

  • Started her freelance business

  • Found the confidence to push for projects that match her strengths

  • Booked her first 'fresh' client, (who wasn't an existing contact) for a price that felt right

  • Been invited to host an industry panel discussion - public speaking was one of her goals

What Lois says:

“Before I started Amy’s programme, my career path had been semi-accidental. Working with Amy has given me the confidence to put myself out there for work in a way that I would never have done just a few months ago. I’ve changed my mindset to appreciate the skills I have to offer, and have more confidence to market them. Best of all, I now have a clear view of my future and a plan to make it happen.”

During the first two months of Lois’s freelance journey, I supported her with building confidence and identifying her goals. Despite the challenges of being based in another country, she quickly brought in client work and established credibility within her market.
